This book came highly recommended to me by a furniture conservator / restorer who provided guidance on restoration of a 210 year old table. If you want to read about, and learn, what not to do in designing, building or caring for furniture, and what might be done to fix such mistakes, this book is a very good place to start. It’s not an easy book to find, as it is generally out of print and press volumes are limited. McGiffen is very clear in his writing as to what works, and what doesn’t. His advice regarding Old English and similar furniture “polish” ended its use in our house on the good furniture.
